Gifts for an outdoorsy dad
For the one who checks the weather forecast for fun.
The safest outdoor gifts are the ones he’d buy himself but keeps putting off — the slightly-too-nice version of something he already uses. Start from what he actually does outside, then pick the upgrade.
Stocking-filler and under €30
- A quality headlamp. Rechargeable, lightweight — useful for camping, late hikes, and rummaging in the garage.
- Merino socks or a buff. The unsexy gear nerds quietly love. You can never have too many good socks.
- A trail-snack or coffee sampler. Pair it with something bigger or give it on its own.
The reliable mid-range (€30–€100)
- An insulated flask or food jar. Hot coffee at the summit, or a warm lunch on a cold day. A good one is a decade-long companion.
- A packable rain shell or insulated layer. If you know his size and brand, an upgrade here is always welcome.
- A multi-tool or a proper fixed-blade knife. For the camper, fisher or general fixer.
- A dry bag or daypack. Especially for paddlers and anyone who’s been caught in the rain one too many times.
The big one (€100+)
- A GPS watch or a handheld GPS. For hikers and trail runners who track routes and elevation.
- A two-person tent or a better sleeping bag. If he camps, weight and warmth are where the money shows.
- Trekking poles or quality boots. Practical, used hard, and genuinely appreciated when they’re good.
- An experience. A guided climb, a fishing charter, a national-park trip. Often the best “gift” isn’t a thing at all.
How to choose between them
Match the activity, then the season, then his level. A weekend car-camper and an ultralight thru-hiker want very different things from the same €100. When in doubt, upgrade something he already owns and loves rather than introducing a brand-new hobby.
Want this tailored to your dad?
When the Engift finder opens you’ll describe him — “my dad who camps and just got into fly fishing” — and we’ll match real products to that.
